Fes medina guide: finding your way around
The Fes medina has thousands of lanes and no cars. Getting a little lost is part of it. A few landmarks are enough to feel at ease.
Use the gates as landmarks
You navigate by the gates (bab): Bab Bou Jeloud to the west, Bab Rcif in the centre near the river, Bab Guissa to the north. Fix in mind the gate nearest your riad — for La Petite Maison that is Rcif square, a five-minute walk away.
Downhill, then back uphill
The medina is on a slope. As a rule you walk downhill towards Al-Quaraouiyine and Rcif square, and uphill towards Bab Bou Jeloud. When in doubt, following the flow of people almost always leads to a main artery.
A licensed guide for day one
Hiring an official guide for the first half-day saves time and gives context. The riad works with French- and English-speaking guides — just ask at reception.
Safety and etiquette
The medina is safe, including in the evening on the busy streets. Keep your bag and phone close in crowds, wear comfortable shoes, and politely decline unsolicited "guides" if you would rather explore alone.
The lanes empty early: after 9 pm it is best to return along a lit main street or ask to be met.
Reaching the door of the riad
No car enters the medina. The riad arranges a private transfer to Bab Rcif, then a porter walks you the last few minutes. Let us know your arrival time in advance via the contact page.
