When planning a trip to Fes, the reflex is often to go through a big booking platform. It is handy for comparing, but when it comes to actually booking, writing directly to the riad has real advantages, especially with a small house. Here is why, and how to do it safely. If you have not yet chosen your area or your riad, start with where to stay in Fes and how to choose a riad in Fes.

What happens when you book through a platform

Booking platforms provide a real service: visibility, reviews and online payment. But they earn a commission on every stay, paid by the property, which often represents a significant share of the nightly rate. For a large hotel it is one cost among many. For a riad with a handful of rooms, it is a large part of what keeps the house maintained, the team paid and the welcome generous.

When you book direct, that money stays in the house. That is why small riads often make an effort on price, terms or services for guests who contact them directly.

What you gain by booking direct

A conversation with your hosts from day one

When you write to the riad, you are talking to the people who will welcome you. You can ask all your questions and get advice on how long to stay, which room suits you best and how to plan your days. The relationship starts before you even arrive.

Choosing the exact room

On a platform, you often book a category. Direct, you can choose the room itself: the one with the balcony, the one with the stained glass, the suite for the children. In a riad where every room is different, that matters.

Arranging your arrival and extras

A transfer from the airport or the station, a late arrival time, a porter at the medina gate, dinner on your first evening, a guide for the next morning: everything is settled in the same conversation. This is particularly useful in Fes, where arriving in the medina takes a little organising; see our guide to getting from Fes airport to the medina.

More flexibility

If your dates change, your flight is delayed or something unexpected happens, it is much easier to sort things out directly with your hosts than through a remote customer service desk.

When a platform is still useful

To be fair, a platform remains handy for reading lots of reviews, comparing several places quickly, collecting loyalty points or paying by card in advance. Nothing stops you from using platforms to find a riad and then writing to it directly to book. In fact, that is exactly what many of our guests do.

How to book a riad direct safely

  • Use the riad’s official website or its published contact details (phone, WhatsApp, email), and check they match those in online reviews.
  • Ask for a written confirmation with dates, room, total price, what is included and the cancellation terms.
  • If a deposit is requested, check that the bank details are in the name of the riad or its manager, and keep a record of the exchange.
  • Clarify which payment methods are accepted on site.

Good questions to ask before confirming

  • Is breakfast included, and until what time is it served?
  • Is an airport transfer available, at what price, and who will meet you?
  • Are the rooms heated in winter and air-conditioned in summer?
  • What is the cancellation policy, and is a deposit required?
  • Does the riad accept cards, or should you bring cash?

Paying for a riad in Morocco

Many riads, especially small ones, do not take cards and ask for payment in cash or by bank transfer. The dirham is a closed currency that cannot be bought outside Morocco: you withdraw it locally, from the many ATMs near the medina gates, or exchange money on arrival. Some riads also accept euros or US dollars in cash. All our money tips are in our Fes travel tips.

How to book La Petite Maison

To book with us, the easiest way is the form on our contact and booking page: pick your dates on the availability calendar and the room you would like, and we reply quickly to confirm. You can also message us on WhatsApp or by email. Your stay is paid on arrival, in cash (dirhams, euros or US dollars), or by bank transfer in advance; a deposit may be requested in high season. Cancellation is free up to seven days before arrival. We arrange your transfer from the airport or the station, with a porter to the riad.

Take the time to compare our rooms and read the story of the riad, then write to us with your dates: we will suggest the room that suits you best. And if you are still unsure about the type of accommodation, our comparison riad vs hotel in Fes and our article on the small boutique riad will help you decide.
